Advertising on Facebook – 3 Big Myths

by E.David Fenton

Advertising on Facebook is not as simple as many Internet entrepreneurs originally believe. Sure it’s easy to create your own cool fan page; but what happens next? Just like in any other start up, you have to advertise. Think of your Facebook page as a blog; you need readers so you have to attract them.

Although this time, it’s not just anyone on the Internet; this time you are looking for a Facebook member base. It is fun to stay connected and meet new friends on Facebook but advertising on Facebook is very different. Below are 3 common myths that you should be aware of.

Myth 1 - If you create a fan page, people will find you. If this was true, everyone who had a Facebook fan page would be extremely successful. Unfortunately, this doesn’t happen. You have to work hard to advertise your fan page just like you do for any other site you may have.

A fan page is fun to create and you don’t have to put a lot into it. However, if you just note the basics or go all out and add widgets and other fun stuff you must still advertise. If you have surfed around Facebook, you know that you can recognize something by clicking the “like” button. The “like” is used to indicate you like other peoples comments without you having to say anything. You can also “like” other pages.

What do you need to do to get started in advertising on Facebook? You need to create a link from your website to your fan page and of course, a link on your fan page to direct readers to your website. You can also link your fan page to other Internet communities such as Twitter and to your blog. Encourage other businesses to put their link on your fan page so that their followers will see you and your followers will see them. You can also suggest your page to your Facebook friends and you can also buy ads.

Myth 2 - Discussions are started by fans because of your “brand”. You have to give them something to discuss first. This is a place where typically you ask to be a friend; so, you need to invite people into your discussion. This is done by posting to your fan page quotes, statistics, photos, or tid bits of information about your product or service.

You can even have a survey going and whoever answers first wins a prize. Offering something for free is an easy process in advertising on Facebook. Everyone likes a challenge and also the opportunity to get something for free. This of drawings held at the mall or other large events; each one gather tons of names and phone numbers. Hello! This is advertising without the person realizing it!

Myth 3 - It doesn’t matter what people say on Facebook about your brand. Um, yes it does! Thousands of people use Facebook everyday to communicate something to someone. Think about it; when someone posts a comment, how many people actually see that comment? It depends upon how their individual accounts are set up.

But if they allow all of their friends to see any post, just imagine how people will see that negative or positive post? If someone has a lot of friends, typically their posts can be seen by almost anyone. If this same person is well liked, their friends are probably going to “listen” to what that person has to say.

As you can see, these 3 myths are very powerful to understand and realize that they are just not true. You can attract people, you can get them involved and you can get to know them better. Understanding who you are advertising to will help your advertising on Facebook to be successful.

Affiliate Program Business Basics

Affiliate program businesses are still on a roll as the boom in the affiliate industry continues. Many are a part of this industry, and many more want to enter it, either as merchants or as affiliates. The world of affiliate business continues to change and everyone needs to adapt to these changes to be able to stay in the business. The best way to have the ability to go with the radical flow of affiliating is to have firm grasp of the fundamentals. The basics of putting up and operating an affiliate program business are vital to success.

Affiliate Program Business Introduction
A website is the flag that signifies the company it belongs to. In the past only the well established and highly profitable companies have their own websites. But nowadays, thanks to the continuous evolution of the Internet, setting up a website has become so easy anyone can do actually do it. The fastest and easiest way of building a website is by using an online website builder that has ready-made templates and other webpage elements you can choose from to construct your very own unique website design. These sites will also be the ones to provide your sites URL for you. The downside to using these site builders is that most of them attach advertisements on webpages that are made with them, and their greatest advantage is the ability to design a website and get it online in less than an hour.

Design only grabs the attention of human readers, but before people can marvel at the beauty and greatness of your sites appearance, they must first be able to find it. And for people to find your site, the best and fastest way is that they find it in the results page of the major search engines. And one of the best ways you can get good rankings on the trusted search engines is through search engine optimization or SEO. SEO however can prove to be complex and hard to do especially to those who have never even heard of it before. A good alternative to SEO in getting your website seen is engaging in an affiliate program. Such action allows you to profit from your content-driven website’s traffic as well as make sales with the same website.

Affiliate Program Business Definition
An affiliate program sometimes also called associate program in layman’s terms is a system of arrangements in which an online website known as a merchant website pays affiliate websites commissions to send traffic to it. The affiliate websites post links to divert the traffic they receive to the merchant site. They are then paid depending on the affiliate agreement. The commissions may be based on the number of visitors the affiliate site sends to the merchant site, the number of people the affiliate site sends to the merchant site and clicks at least one of the product advertisements, or the number of visitors directed to the merchant site by the affiliate site and actually makes a purchase. The framework of the agreement is that the merchant pays according to the agreement the associate whenever his affiliate site brings site traffic or money to the merchant website. The recruitment of affiliates is not only a great way to sell products over the internet but it is also a great marketing strategy as it provides the merchant website a unique competitive advantage. Networking can be said to be one of the best and most effective ways to get your site famous online.

There are at least three parties in an affiliate program transaction:

1. The Customer
2. The Affiliate Site
3. The Merchant Site

The concept of having an affiliate program business which utilizes the World Wide Web as a marketing strategy was first announced to the public in 1996 by Amazon.com CEO and Founder Jeff Bezos. Amazon.com encourages affiliates to post links to the Amazon website in general or to specific books. Whenever someone clicks on the link and makes a purchase the affiliate who owns the link will receive a certain pre-agreed percentage of the earnings. All the affiliate need to do is to send traffic, and the rest is done by Amazon.com like order taking, money collection and product shipment. Amazon.com is not only the first affiliate program business; it is also on of the most successful with more than half a million affiliate websites.

Over the years affiliate programs have grown to epic proportions and have taken many different forms. Affiliate program businesses are now everywhere and they are found in almost every niche of the business world. Many companies specializing in e-commerce now function as merchants while those who do little or totally no e-commerce work as affiliates.

Affiliate Program Business Basic Payment Methods
There are three basic types of affiliate program payment arrangements:

1. Pay-Per-Sale (Cost-Per-Sale)
The pay-per-sale agreement has been popularized by the mother of affiliate program businesses Amazon.com. Under cost-per-sale the affiliate is earns commissions from the merchant each time he sends a customer to the merchant website and that customer makes an actual purchase. Amazon and many others pay a specific percentage of the sale as commission while others pay a fixed rate for every sale.

2. Pay-Per-Click (Cost-Per-Click)
Pay-Per-Click is considered by many as the most popular and common affiliate agreement. Under such agreement affiliates are paid fixed rates based on the number of visitors who click on the links placed on the affiliate website that lead to the merchant website. A purchase is not required to earn commissions, all that has to be done is that the visitor clicks the link and stays for a certain time usually at least 30 seconds on the merchant website. Whatever the visitor does once he gets to the merchant site does not affect the commission.

3. Pay-Per-Lead (Cost-Per-Lead)
Under the pay-per-lead arrangement affiliates are paid based of how many visitors they send to the merchant website and subsequently sign up as leads. Signing up as leads means that the visitors fill out the information request form at the merchant site. Leads are used as targets for conversion into customers or are simply sold to other companies which are in search of leads.

Affiliate Program Business Other Payment Methods
A company sets up an affiliate program based on its needs. Therefore, it is very usual for a company to have an affiliate agreement having some variations with the basic payment methods. There are also three common variations of affiliate program payment methods.

1. Two – tier programs
Affiliate program businesses that offer two-tier agreements profit through sales recruitment and commission sales hence thy have a structure similar to network marketing business or multilevel marketing organizations. In addition to the traditional commissions based on sales, clicks or leads facilitated by the affiliate’s site, commissions based on the activity or productivity of referred affiliate sites are also received.

2. Residual Programs
Affiliates under this arrangement are continuously paid commissions if the visitors they get to go to the merchant website also continue to make purchases of products and services from the merchant. This king of arrangement is usually utilized by online merchants who require regular payments usually on a monthly basis from their customers.

3. Pay-Per-Impression (Cost-Per-Impression)
Online merchants who make use of this arrangement which is also sometimes referred to as pay-per-view pays commissions according to the number of visitors affiliates can cause to see the merchant’s banner ad. Such arrangement has been developed as an advertising strategy but has now been adopted as an affiliate strategy.

The reduced risk is the biggest advantage of the payment methods utilized by affiliate program businesses because a merchant pays out commissions only when its desired results are met. Traditional advertising like television and radio ads as well as online banner ads are relatively risky on the part of the advertiser because they are like placing their money on a bet that the advertisements will be effective and achieve whatever they are suppose to achieve. The ad is considered as a success when it brings to the merchant more money than what was spent, but this is unfortunately not always the case. With affiliate programs on the other hand, the online merchant only pays out commissions when things are going the way he wants them. It is far easier for websites to join affiliate programs than it is for them to attract advertisers but much less risky for merchants.

Affiliate Program Business Administration
Affiliate programs are relatively simple and easy to manage, all they need is some dedication and patience because there should always be someone tracking the actual activity of all affiliate’s links to be able to provide them proper commissions.

Common data an affiliate program business should always be aware of are as follows.

1. The number of people who click on the merchant site’s link on an affiliate site
2. The number of people who end up buying something or performing some other predetermined action once the affiliate sends them to the merchant site.
3. The number of people who see the merchant site’s banner link on an affiliate site
4. The original arrangement between the merchant and each affiliate as well as changes if any.

Both merchant and affiliates need a lot of effort to enter the affiliate industry. Merchants need to actively seek and recruit affiliates while affiliates need to actively search for affiliate programs they might be interested in. Many huge and successful affiliate programs like Amazon.com even deal with their affiliates directly because the benefits they reap from their associates are more than worth direct administration. Such companies are in complete control of the payout process and the merchant is the sole entity that determines the amount of commission each affiliate will receive. In spite of this fact, these companies still attract a lot of associates due to the fact that there is no real risk or cost in their program. Affiliates simply put links up and wait for commissions.

Affiliate Program Business Networks
Affiliate networks composed of affiliate brokers serve as mediators between merchants and affiliate program websites and affiliates. They assist the associates put up the links in their websites and also track all the activity of these links as well as arrange all payments. Affiliate networks are also beneficial to merchants in the sense that they help recruit affiliates by including the merchant’s website in their online affiliate program directory. Help centers and report centrals are the common features of affiliate networks though additional features may vary.

Affiliate networks are most beneficial to aspiring affiliates because through them a wide variety of affiliate programs become available in one central location making finding a good and suitable program that fits your site much easier. Affiliate networks of course, as payment for the convenience they serve take a certain cut on each transaction they facilitate which is usually around 20% of the affiliate commission.

Any type of website can involve itself into an affiliate program though most affiliate network service agreements forbid offensive and pornographic content. Successful affiliate program businesses though referred to as merchants do no even need to make sales to gain profits. Content based affiliate businesses in fact get most of their earnings from advertisers which where attracted into advertising on the merchant website because of the high volume of traffic its affiliates are sending to it; hence there is direct conversion of traffic into profit. Pay-per-click affiliate programs are one of the most efficient means of increasing traffic.

It can be said that there are as many kinds of affiliates as there are types of businesses. Generally, any website from top sites to personal pages can take part in an affiliate program, and with the correct choices can earn themselves some money. There also exist affiliate businesses which are just actually huge collections of many affiliate programs. These sites operate by joining a lot of pay-per-click or pay-per-lead advertisement programs and then offer their visitors a portion of the commission they receive on each click or offer them a chance to win big rewards.

Becoming an Affiliate Program Businessman
The first choice for anyone wanting to involve himself in affiliate programs is whether to be a merchant or an affiliate or both. Setting up an affiliate program and becoming an affiliate merchant is the best choice for those who operate an e-commerce site and desire to improve their sales. Becoming an affiliate of several merchants is the best choice on the other hand for people who own small content sites and run them only as a hobby. The choice is likely to be influenced by the budget and the element of affiliate programs what suites your website the most.

Entering an affiliate program as an associate is quite easy. Just go to the merchant website and fill out the online affiliate application form. The form is likely to ask of your name, address, desired payment method and other personal information as well as information on your website like URL, name, and content description and then of course have you agree to the merchant’s service agreement. Affiliate networks are generally free.

Once you receive the approval of the affiliate network you are then ready to start selecting the affiliate programs that interest you. Since most affiliate programs accept affiliates at no cost al all, it is best to immediately discard all programs than charge membership fees. Once selection is complete, the merchants you have selected will then review our site and once they accept your site they will guide you step by step on the process of appropriately posting links. Payment arrangements will also be finalized during this guide. Most affiliate programs require associates to reach a minimum earning threshold before they release commissions because of the fact that the amount an affiliate earns per transaction is relatively small. This means that no payment will be received by the affiliate until he reaches the particular minimum amount. After everything is set up and all has been explained to you, you can then start working on your website to help you earn more money.

I am an affiliate of the SFI affiliate network marketing program. I saw a banner which I liked. I was asked to copy and paste the image into my URL code. Certainly it is not like copying to a word file. How do I do that please?

The Web Guy answers:

I use CJ.com and it is a lot easier. Once you get accepted to a store they give you lots of choices to copy and paste banners or text ads on your site. You usually get a percent of anything sold.

I’m good at writing and enjoy games (like scrabble), but I’m not

Any good ideas ?

The Web Guy answers:

Hi bike boy

Two ideas come to my mind after reading your question –

If your are good at writing articles you could charge say $10 each short article
10 a day = $100 a day

(2) Composing crossword puzzles – a bit unusual but somebody has to
make all those crosswords for all the crossword lovers. And if you are good it can
pay you nicely

Lynn asks…

Facebook Sells your Private Information?

If you have a FaceBook account, then how do you feel about FaceBook selling your private information to other companies for profit?

This isn’t a conspiracy theory these are mere facts. You can
read about it in your privacy policy when you sign up. Not to mention the countless articles about it on the internet. FaceBook is not secretive about it either. They have said the same thing in several medias too. It is the price for using their site.

Then there is the thing about the tracking cookie you also get from going to their site.

Microsoft has bought assets in FaceBook for about 240 Million Dollars simply because your private information is priceless when it comes to marketing information. What Moves and Grooves amongst the youth today products wise.

Are you a smart FaceBook user who doesn’t disclose ANY private information ranging from your name to your personal conversations and descriptions of yourself?.

Do you already know this/didn’t know but doesn’t care?
I would love some feedback from some younger and older FaceBook users
yes they also sell your email information. There is alot of controversy regarding this and the spam mail you get as a result. The tracking cookie on their site is also designed for this fashion
Everything you type on your account is up for sale…everything

The Web Guy answers:

No they don’t but I’m always cautious about my personal info, and what I put  on Facebook.

Elizabeth asks…

what’s the best way to create an online group and share information amongst the members?

I want to create a group on real estate agents so we can share leads, opportunities and market information. A blog won’t do it, facebook won’t either, and an email alias/group there is no way to track information easily…and creating or bulding an app from scratch doesn’t make much sense either. There has to be an onlin service that can help me get there….

The Web Guy answers:

You could create Yahoo group. But generally you need email addresses from people you want to invite. I would start a group and then posts the invite on your blog and share it with people whenever possible. It may start out slowly but could grow very rapidly with each person also spreading the word and inviting their friends and colleges.

Good luck.

Questions And Answers On Article Writing Software

Thomas asks…

Hi. I am a newbie with this affiliate marketing. Would you recommend Instant Article Writing software?

Writing is one of the skills I am lacking and looks like IAW is my answer. I am also interest in article rewriting software for article spinner. Do you use these software and would you recommend them?

The Web Guy answers:

Hey there, I would strongly recommend writing your own articles for original content. The only problem with articles writing software and spinners is that there’s no way they can attract organic traffic from search engines (trust me I’ve tried it). Automatically generated articles are easy to spot and since search engines like google have been ‘wising up’ in recent times its almost for certain that your work on your site wont get indexed at all – so there goes your chances of getting any traffic to your site. If you’re looking for some specific guide lines on fresh content generation then please my blog and do some reading – hope that will clear some obstacles.

There is a great program to learn how to do article marketing at http://unibyte.biz/npc

Affiloblueprint? What does it contain? Is my $197 worth it?

I am contemplating to subscribe to Mark Ling Affiloblueprint. I am a member of Affilorama and is surprised with his affiliate marketing secrets. Do you think it is worth my $197? Thanks

The Web Guy answers:

Hi, I used Affiloblueprint to start and build my online business.

A one time payment of $197 is a huge investment but it helped me get focused and eventually earn $500/week in my different niches websites.

I got a lifetime membership and for me it has already paid the training monthly and coaching by Mark Ling.

I don’t have enough knowledge in computers but Mark Ling almost literally walked me out and showed how he can make a site profitable even without sufficient knowledge in Internet marketing.

This is definitely one of the best investments I have ever made in my entire life.

Cindy asks…

Affiliate marketing works?

Has anybody had moderate or great success through affiliate marketing? I can’t invest any money right now, and the free blog and ad sites aren’t working…anyone got a secret they could share?

The Web Guy answers:

Ryuk,

she said she wasn’t having any luck with the adsense route. But to be honest, if you’re not having luck with adsense chances are you are going to have trouble with affiliate marketing because like someone said you need to have a website that is receive lots of targeted traffic for a specific niche to be successful with affiliate marketing.

One thing you can do with affiliate marketing is write reviews about the products that you’re trying to sell for commission and posting those reviews on your blog and in ezines and article submission sites with a link back to your affiliate page so people will read about the product and come buy them from you. I’ve had success with that method.

I use a new site made by Jason DeVelvis, a 24 year old whiz kid who’s made a LOT of money online and you can find his site here (it is my affiliate link): https://www.SaleFlurry.com/5/streak_tlu

If you need to make a little easy income to re-invest into a domain name/hosting, etc I suggest you try GPT sites, especially reputable ones that can be found and reviewed here:

Best of luck to you.

Questions And Answers On Internet Affiliate Marketing Legitimate

Thomas asks…

Are there internet marketing groups offering free affiliation home based business legitimate? Name some pls.?

I have affiliated for free with two internet groups who said I will be earning by just inviting more people to the site. When these people buy or order products I will have commission. Later on they require me to upgrade in order to earn. Upgrading means I have pay a certain amount per month. Is this not a harms way?

The Web Guy answers:

It sure is and this is how affiliate programs work. They offer nothing except hype and expect you to pay. It very similar to pyramid selling. All the money goes to the top. Start your own business on the web and that way you will make the money.

Lynn asks…

Bad Vibes on Vortex Marketing Group, does anyone know of negative comments or legitimate complaint about them?

I am interested if any negative information or links exist that may indicate Vortex Marketing Group, Joel Sauceda and his other companies and affiliates, including the somewhat less than glamorous products offered. Odd informational responses from all the standard search engines seems to defy what the mathematical statistiscs should dictate. In all my internet searches, everyone seems to be showing only good responses front loaded and supported internally by other members and their links driving the most popular to appear relevent. It seems to be a very suspicious pyamidal scam. The self sustaining free peer support system determined to gain entry into respectable ecommerce. Like an Amway or other such systems, using devices to slowly bait the interest and slowly feed the info. I am very concern because a relative called to help introduce me to this with, you know, a free benefactor code. I’m looking for objectivity, and yes, I have a background in general advertising and direct mail.

How to ensure Internet Law compliance?

Most people including the internet gurus do not address these aptly. There are a couple of scenarios. 1) Affiliate Marketing – my take is to seek immunity to provide legal inclusions on the landing page representing the original seller. I do not know what legalease to use and where to obtain such content. 2) Email Marketing – By outsourcing to vendors like Aweber, GetResponse, iContact, because they are CAN-SPAM compliant, suppose opted-in subscribers claim they did not do so would providing an audit trail on how these subscribers got signed up good enough as evidence to nullify their claims? Becos these outsource parties handled these data capture and unsubscription, can I be rendered immune by default should there be a lawsuit arising? 3) Private Label, Master Reselle Rights – I was told that the people selling them may not be the originators and hence what they checklist on the rights of use may not be legitimate. How can one keep on the side of the law when using such rights?

The Web Guy answers:

> How can one keep on the side of the law when using such rights?

Short answer:

If you are fussing around in such nebulous activities as affiliate marketing and opt-out mailing lists to the extent that you are worried about your legal exposure, then you should reconsider the entire venture. Seek out qualified legal experience to advise you. But even though I am not a lawyer, I can advise you there is no way you are going to “outsource” your legal liability 100%. Even if you set up a corporation, such a corporate veil would be easily pierced.

Longer answer:

> 1) Affiliate Marketing – my take is to seek immunity to provide legal inclusions on the landing page representing the original seller. I do not know what legalease to use and where to obtain such content.

I don’t know what you mean by “legal inclusion representing the original seller” so the question doesn’t make sense to me other then you seem to be seeking to avoid liability for your actions.

You can bet such services run the gamut from sleazy to legit. In any case, again you seem to be seeking to avoid liability for your actions. Read and understand, and if you don’t understand, hire a lawyer to explain, the TOS of the service you choose. Also understand what is not in the TOS compared to the law. You will need an attorney that specializes in such matters.

BTW, my expertise here comes form having been an early Product Manager at the first opt-in outsource service provider.

>> 3) Private Label, Master Reselle Rights – I was told that the people selling them may not be the originators and hence what they checklist on the rights of use may not be legitimate. How can one keep on the side of the law when using such rights?

Again, IANAL, but if you are not clear on the rights of your vendors to represent the terms of the deals, then do not sign any contracts or otherwise rely on those representations.

Do email blasters help in advertising or are they just another money squeezing sites?

I have Blast4traffic,yahoo mailer, utube mailer and many other mailers and blasters which i have used for the last couple of days but i have still not got any increase in the traffic. Can anyone suggest some good sources? I would be most obliged for your help in this regard.I have also used the blog blaster as well.

http://www.mymarketinggenie.com

The Web Guy answers:

Since my email does a very effective job of reducing my spam down to nothing and the rest I never even open your wasting time on me.

Even if your offer is valid I don’t support filling up peoples email boxes and wasting bandwidth on anything solicited by email. Even the ads and crap I get from companys who claim they won’t email me and still do. I don’t think I’m on the minority on that.

I think people are sending you a pretty clear message. If you send spam we aren’t going to visit. Dumping into blogs isn’t going to work either because everyone has seen it before and responds the same way.

If you want to be rewarded for doing a website then you will have to promote it yourself. Stop trying to find shortcuts.

Questions And Answers On Clickbank Commissions

Caroline asks…

Do mailing list links provide clickbank commissions?

I am trying to do some article marketing in the self help niche. I chose self confidence creator by robert anthony as my product to promote. Anyway I tried joining the mailing list via my hoplink. I noticed in the emails that it has links back to the site to encourage sales. The emails don’t include my hoplink, will I still get commissions off the sales in the mailing list?

The Web Guy answers:

Hello Johnathon,

You joined your merchant’s mailing list, is that correct?

If that’s what you mean, then the emails you are receiving from them will not contain your Affiliate link. Those emails go out to all of their Affiliates – they are not intended to promote any one Affiliate’s link. They are probably sent to Affiliates to motivate them or supply them with information to help them promote the vendor’s product.

Now when you create your own mailing list – and that is a very good thing to do – you will send out your own emails to folks who have subscribed to your list and you will use your Affiliate link in those emails and you will receive credit for any sales that are generated.

Jane asks…

Is it legal for me to lie to people about money making so I can be paid commissions by Clickbank?

I know that most are junks on Clickbank. However, I want to be paid by lying to people that I promised them they will make money if they buy whatever products I’m advertising so I can get paid commissions by Clickbank.

Is that okay and is it legal?

The Web Guy answers:

It’s not illegal, because you’re not promising them anything. You are just promoting a product. It’s the creator of the product that is promising them stuff. And when it comes to making money, it’s not guaranteed success. Think of it like opening a franchise. Some people are making lots and lots of money out of it. Others aren’t. Why? It comes down to a variety of factors and variables that make the difference. How well its run. Location. Etc… You can rarely guarantee success. You can only provide people with the information and tools.

To stay on the moral side of the fence though, just don’t lie. Instead of saying ‘I used this product and it made me thousands of dollars’, say ‘use this product and you could make thousands of dollars’.

Questions And Answers On Affiliate Marketing Business Model

Jemima asks…

Software reseller, affiliate, marketing firm to promote my products ?

I have a website, creditcard processors (2checkout, ikobo, paypal, shareit) and software products.

I want to work with advertisers (I tried bidvertiser and know adwords), affiliates, resellers or marketers on a profit sharing basis. So basically I can sell them the licences (product keys) as they resell the product to customers or I can process payment and give them the finders fee. They need to promote (seo, ads, maillists, better web site?) and actually sell the products to obtain any money.

How to accomplish this business model, which companies to work with ?

If you do not have experience of running your own affiliate scheme then use Commission Junction http://www.cj.com/

Ken asks…

can you be employed and self employed at the same time (UK)?

Ok so basically i have a job, but lets say i wanted to earn money online aswell through affiliate marketing and webcam model which is a self employed business, how would i go about paying taxes

The Web Guy answers:

You would become a sole trader..this basically means you are an employed, self employed individual.

You would need to register as self employed. You can do this by phoning the newly self employed helpline, although the number i can’t remember.

They will register you and allocate you a UTR (Unique Tax Reference) number. You need to keep all reciepts, invoices etc for a minimum of 6 or 7 years each. These will enable you to complete your tax return. You will need to declare all self employed and employed earnings either on paper by the 31st of October every year or the 31st January online, each year. I recommend online as it gives you your liability calculation then and there and you can arrange to pay it.

It’s all very straight forward, although i must warn you, you will be penalised for not keeping your records, filing your returns or making your payments..and even if you decide you no longer want to be SE…because you have registered…you may still get tax returns for years later..you MUST fill them in..it’s a legal document.

If you need to know anymore about your filing, payments on account, or ways to reduce your liability just ask.

Hope this helps,
Claire.

Susan asks…

Where can I find an entrepreneur who already owns a web site hosting company to partner with my venture?

I have 600 plus websites that run on a custom affiliate marketing website builder and they are currently being hosted for $60 a month on ONE IP address. I was told they need spread out over at least 10 separate IPS for better SEO and want to PARTNER rather than PAY a hosting company. I am willing to give up stock in my company if we can find the right people who also might be well connected with developers and programmers. The business model combines individual .com domain names AND a social network cobined to build a BRAND.

The Web Guy answers:

Godaddy has a fine affiliate program. You can find additional reseller / affiliate programs or potential business partners at http://www.webhostingtalk.com

That said, why not start renting dedicated servers and prevent entertaining a middleman? There are many dedicated server vendors out there, including plenty who will manage your servers, too. Http://www.rackspace.com comes to mind, as does http://www.dreamhost.com
